The Houhanji 後漢紀 "Annals of the Later Han dynasty" (25-220 AD) in 30 juan "scrolls" by Yuan Hong 袁宏, a Jin period 晉 historian, is only one of several histories of the Later Han period later overshadowed by Fan Ye's 范曄 Houhanshu 後漢書, which was granted the status of official dynastic history. Yuan Hong's history is one of the few "alternative histories" of the Later Han that survived without greater losses. Yuan Hong made use of older histories of the Later Han period, like the books of Xie Cheng 謝承, Sima Biao 司馬彪 and Hua Jiao 華嶠, but he also collected other material, like biographies, imperial diaries (Han Ling-Xian qijuzhu 漢靈獻起居注) or collections of court memorials submitted to the throne by high officials (Han mingchen zou 漢名臣奏).
There are seven alternative histories of the Later Han period which survive, the so-called Qijia Houhan shu 七家後漢書 "The seven histories of the Later Han dynasty", compiled by Wang Wentai 汪文臺 (1796-1844). It was annotated by Zhou Tianyou 周天游 and republished with the Shanghai guji 上海古籍 press in 1986 under the title Bajia Houhan shu 八家後漢書 "The eight histories of the Later Han dynasty" (including a few fragments of Zhang Ying's 張瑩 Houhan nanji 後漢南記, No. 7):
- 後漢紀 Houhanji by 張璠 Zhang Fan (Three Kingdoms period, from Wei), not much surviving
Xie Cheng (Three Kingdoms period, from Wu), 8 juan surviving
Xue Ying (Three Kingdoms period, from Wu), not much surviving
Sima Biao (Jin period), 5 juan surviving
Hua Jiao (Jin period), 3 juan surviving
Xie Shen (Jin period), not much surviving
Zhang Ying (Jin period), not much surviving
