Houhualu 後畫錄

Houhualu 後畫錄 is a book on painting written by the Buddhist monk Yancong 彦悰, sometimes erroneously written 彦琮, who lived in the early 7th century.

His book consists of notes on paintings he had the occasion to inspect during his stay in the capital Chang'an 長安 (today's Xi'an 西安, Shaanxi), and of rankings that he added according to the common principle. His Houhualu describes the artworks of 37 painters. Zhang Yanyuan 張彥遠 (early 8th cent.), author of the Lidai minghua ji 歷代名畫記, blamed Yacong's ratings as most unreasonable, and remarks that even the biographies in his book have many flaws. It was therefore not further considered as a decent scholarly work.
