Songchuang mengyu 松窗夢語 "Dream talks by the Pine Window" is a collection of historical notes written during the late Ming period 明 (1368-1644) by Zhang Han 張瀚 (1510-1593), courtesy name Ziwen 子文, from Renhe 仁和 (today part of Hangzhou 杭州, Zhejiang). He obtained the jinshi degree in 1535 and held important posts in the Ministries of Works (gongbu 工部) and Justice (xingbu 刑部), as well as serving as Grand Controller of Shaanxi and Minister of Personnel (libu shangshu 吏部尚書) in Nanjing. In 1577, he offended the chief minister Zhang Juzheng 張居正 (1525-1582) and had to resign from office, returning to his hometown. He later drew upon his experiences in official service and travel to compile this work.
The book consists of eight juan and thirty-three sections or chapters. It combines geographically based records (such as Huanyou ji 宦遊紀 "Records of official travels" and Beilu ji 北虜紀 "Records of the northern barbarians") with thematic categories (such as Shanggu ji 商賈紀 “Records of merchants" and Baigong ji 百工紀 "Records of artisans"). It systematically documents the economy, society, culture, and customs of the Ming period, with particular emphasis on handicrafts and commercial activities.
Blending personal experience with a mix of factual and anecdotal narration, the author writes from the reflective perspective of sitting alone in his study. The work thus possesses both historical value and moral-philosophical depth, and it is regarded as an important reference for the study of Ming-period social and economic history.
The text is included in the series Wulin wangzhe yizhu 武林往哲遺著.
