Renzi daolun 任子道論 "Master Ren's Discourse on the Way"

The Renzi daolun 任子道論 "Master Ren's discourse on the Way", also called Renzi daode lun 任子道德論, is a Daoist treatise compiled by the Wei period 魏 (220-265) writer Ren Gu 任嘏. The book was originally 10 juan "scrolls" long, but only fragements are preserved that have been collected by the Qing period 清 (1644-1911) scholar Ma Guohan 馬國翰. They are assembled in the Yuhan shanfang jiyi shu 玉函山房輯佚書. Some of the fragments might also have been written by Ren Yi 任奕, a contemporarian of Ren Gu that was inclined more to Confucianism than to Daoism. This confusion is not Ma Guohan's responsibility but the carelessness of the compilers of early encyclopedias like the Beitang shuchao 北堂書抄 Chuxueji 初學記. Writings of Ma Yi were apparently collected in a book Renzi 任子 which is easy to confuse with Renzi daolun. A detailed explanation of this confusion can be found in the Xixiu siku quanshu tiyao 續修四庫全書提要, which is more reliable than Ma Guohan's uncommented collection.
There is a Confucian treatise called Renzi 任子 attributed to the Han period 漢 (206 BCE-220 CE) writer Ren Yi 任奕.
