A nomadic people roaming the area of modern Inner and Outer Mongolia, by the Jin Dynasty 晉 called Chile 敕勒, from the Northern Wei period (Beiwei 北魏) on called Gaoche “High Carriages” (because the wheels of their carriages were very large). From the end of the 4th century on they moved southwards and settled in the areas of modern Gansu, Shanxi and Shaanxi. An empire called Wei 魏, established by Di Liao 翟遼, only survived a couple of years (388-392). In 487 a khan called "Afuzhiluo 阿伏至羅" founded the Gaoche empire around Turfan/Xinjiang that lasted until 541. Gaoche was able to control the silk roads until it was destroyed by the Rouran 柔然 federation.
