The Yishi 弈史 "History of Chess" was written by the Ming period 明 (1368-1644) scholar Wang Zhideng 王稚登 (correctly written 王穉登), author of the book Wujun Danqing zhi 吳郡丹青志. The short book assembles sources to the history of chess-playing in China. it is written in a clear and refined way, and is enriched by a treatise on the topic in an appendix, in which Wang Zhideng criticizes the position of many authors who saw chess as a kind of superstitional art. The Yishi is to be found in the collectaneum Xuehai leibian 學海類編.
