Tongzhitang jingjie 通志堂經解

Tongzhitang jingjie 通志堂經解 "Commentaries on the Classics from the Hall of the Free Mind", also known as Tongzhitang jiujing jie 通志堂九經解, Tongzhitang huike jingjie 通志堂彙刻經解 or shortly Jiujingjie 九經解, is a series compiled by the early Qing-period 清 (1644-1911) writer Nalan Xingde 納蘭性德 (1654-1685).

In his later years Nalan Xingde specialized on the exegesis of the Confucian Classics and collected the most important commentaries from the Song 宋 (960-1279) and Yuan 元 (1279-1368) periods.

The series Tongzhitang jingjie was first printed in 1673 on the initiative of Nalan Xingde and was reprinted in 1713 and, with a supplement, in 1785. It is in fact a compilation of Nalan's teachers Xu Qianxue 徐乾學 (1631-1694) and He Zhuo 何焯 (1661-1722). The version from the Qianlong reign-period 乾隆 (1736-1795) is accompanied by a preface written by the emperor. It was reprinted in 1873 by the Yuedong Press 粵東書局 and the Guangya Publishing House 廣州書局. This version included 146 books with a total length of 1,860 juan.

The texts are all commentaries on the Confucian Classics ranging from the Tang 唐 (618-907) to the Ming 明 (1368-1644) period. Many of them are very rare and have only been preserved in the Tongzhitang jingjie, like Cheng Boyu's 成伯璵 Maoshi zhishuo 毛詩指說 from the Tang period. Others are widespread standard texts, like Lu Deming's 陸德明 (c. 550-630) Jingdian shiwen 經典釋文.

Generally seen, the Tongzhitang jingjie is a very excellent and valuable collection of commentaries to the Classics, yet it also includes commentaries of minor quality and some books identified as forgeries, like the Chunqiu leidui fu 春秋類對賦. Another shortcoming is that the basic texts included some textual and typographical errors that had not been amended.

The Tongzhitang jingjie was also reprinted in 1979 as a facsimile by the Shanghai Guji Press 上海古籍出版社.
