Türgish (Türgiş, Türgiš, "Tuqishi" 突騎施)

The subgroup ("chuo 啜") of Heluoshi 賀邏施 under the Duolu 咄陸, one of the five tribal groups ("nushibi 弩失畢") of the Western Turks. In the 650es the Türgiš belonged to the Turkish federation lead by Ashina Helu 阿史那賀魯, but after the victory of the Tang Dynasty 唐 over the Turks the Türgiš were organized in area-commands (dudufu 都督府) nominally subject to Tang China. In 706 the Türgiš chieftain Wuzhile 烏質勒, follower of Ashina Huseluo Qaγan 阿史那斛瑟羅可汗 who controlled the western regions far to Transoxania (region of the rivers Amu-Darya and Syr-Darya) presented his tribute to the Tang court and was rewarded with the title of king (wang 王), likewise his son Suoge 娑葛. Suoge's opponent Zhongjie 忠節 tried to intervene against Suoge by bribing high Tang officials. A following rebellion of Suoge against the Tang governor ended with Suoge's submission, he was killed later by the Qapaghan Qaghan 默啜可汗, leader of the later Eastern Turkish federation. At the begin of the 8th century Sulu Qaghan 蘇祿 of the Chebishi tribe 車鼻施 acheived the control of the western regions and threw back some intruding troops of the Arabs (Dashi 大食). He was therefore called Abū Muzāhim "Father of the Bull" by them. Sulu's empire was blocked between the empires of Tang China, the Eastern Turks, Tubo (Tibet) 吐蕃, and the Arabs in the west. In 738 Sulu was murdered, and the Türgiš federation gradually dissolved, and the particular tribes were incorporated into the Qarluq federation.
